The collection Polonauts was inspired by a documentary on Zambians preparing for a flight to Mars. This true, though completely implausible story began in 1964 when Zambia became an independent country and wanted to prove their power by taking part in the international space race. The film was founded in the conviction that no one would ever believe that a black man can ever land on Mars. For me, this story was an utopian, melancholic vision of a desire to go somewhere far away. When I was looking for inspiration for my collection, the refugee crisis swelled and it made me realise that for them their expedition to Europe must seem as abstract as a space odyssey.
