For me, Ibsen’s Lady from the Sea is a beautiful story about man, his longings, impossible desires, unrest, richness of his inner world. Also about his connection to the world of nature and subjection to the same laws.
I decided to take up the project of developing design of Ibsen’s production – in my view, a very poetic and symbolic one, including much of the mystery of the Northern nature. My objective was to extract and highlight it through the concept of space. I wanted to make the ambience of this story simple and imaginary, make the elements of stage design a synthesis of certain meanings – visual signs that create the contents of the production. I wanted to bring the story into spiritual realm by clashing the reality of psychological portraits of characters as outlined by Ibsen and the relationships between them with the metaphor of space.
